Ruhango District Profile
Ruhango District is one of the eight districts that make up the Southern Province of Rwanda. It was established by Law No. 29/2005 of 31 December 2005 determining the structure and functioning of the decentralized administrative entities of the Republic of Rwanda. Ruhango District was formed from the former districts of Kabagali, Ntenyo, Ntongwe, as well as the Town of Ruhango.
Currently, Ruhango District is composed of 9 sectors, 59 cells, and 533 villages. It borders the following districts:
- To the North: Muhanga District
- To the South: Nyanza and Nyamagabe Districts
- To the West: Karongi District
- To the East: Kamonyi and Bugesera Districts
Ruhango District is divided into three main geographical zones:
- Amayaga Zone: composed of the sectors of Mbuye, Kinazi, and Ntongwe
- Akabagali Zone: composed of the sectors of Bweramana, Kabagali, and Kinihira
- Central Zone: composed of the sectors of Ruhango, Byimana, and Mwendo
The headquarters of Ruhango District is located in Ruhango Sector, Nyamagana Cell, Nyarusange I Village, about 600 meters from the paved road and approximately 73 kilometers from the City of Kigali on the road to Huye.
Ruhango District has a population of 357,028 people living in 86,803 households, including 178,353 men and 178,675 women. The district covers an area of 626.8 km², with a population density of about 568 inhabitants per km².
The economy of Ruhango District is mainly based on agriculture and livestock farming. The main crops grown include cassava, beans, maize, and rice, while coffee is also an important cash crop that significantly contributes to the livelihoods of the population.
Ruhango District also has large marshlands and is bordered by the Nyabarongo and Akanyaru rivers.
